Beste lezer,
U ziet hier de presentatie van de werken van de eindexamens 2020. Het feit dat wij deze hier kunnen presenteren is een geweldige prestatie. Het zal u namelijk niet ontgaan zijn dat het jaar 2020 voor onze maatschappij, en in het bijzonder voor deze groep afgestudeerden, een behoorlijk extra uitdaging heeft gebracht. Zeker afgezet tegen de algemene angstige en onzekere gevoelens binnen de maatschappij in de voorbije maanden, toont het een enorme kracht en flexibiliteit van de afgestudeerden dat ze – half improviserend en half sprokkelend de eindstreep hebben gehaald. Het is ronduit fantastisch dat deze lichting AKI graduates 2020 zich een weg door de uitdagingen en teleurstellingen heeft weten te banen en binnen alle – soms onmogelijke aandoende – beperkingen een goed eindexamen heeft afgelegd. Ook van de begeleidend docenten en de staf heeft deze tijd heel veel extra gevraagd en dat willen we middels deze presentatie vastleggen, onderstrepen en vieren.
De Covid-19 crisis heeft sociaal economische sporen aangebracht die nog lang voelbaar zullen zijn en in veel gevallen onomkeerbare beweging in gang hebben gezet. Het is snel duidelijk aan het worden dat deze crisis nog lang gevolgen heeft voor onze samenlevingen, meervoud, omdat door de mondiale economische verknopingen geen samenleving meer echt op zichzelf staat. Als gevolg van de coronacrisis is op meerdere plekken en op meerdere manieren de urgentie van een heroverweging c.q. herziening van onze sociale-, economische- en maatschappelijke structuur prominent geworden. Het zou dus makkelijk zijn om een heel pessimistisch toekomstperspectief te schetsen, maar dat zou niet terecht zijn, om twee redenen.
Als eerste is er ‘de grote omdraaier’. Het fijne van een crisis is dat de manager vanuit huis moet werken, terwijl de vakkenvuller ruim baan krijgt in de trein. Het begrip cruciaal beroep laat veel zien over de zin en onzin in onze maatschappelijke verhoudingen. De reis naar Zuid Amerika gaat niet door, maar de achtertuin blijkt veel mogelijkheden tot recreatie te bieden. Kleine dingen worden groot en omgekeerd. Er zal vrijwel niemand te vinden zijn die in de tijd van de intelligente lock-down niet een verhoogde interesse heeft gehad in het ervaren van kunst en cultuur. Een groot deel van de bevolking heeft meer boeken, films, beelden, muziek, foto’s, dans, theaterregistraties en andere kunstvormen ervaren dan normaal, en daar ook veel troost en vreugde aan gehad. Het belang van een goede en sterke culturele sector is dus lang niet zo duidelijk geweest. Deze tijd is niet eenvoudig geweest maar de afgelopen periode heeft geleid tot een vergroot bewustzijn bij de burger dat ‘het kleine geluk’ veel waarde heeft. Het goede nieuws is ook dat de crisis alle sectoren hard raakt en ook razendsnel een einde maakt aan bepaalde dogma’s en verzuilingen.
Daarnaast hebben de kunsten zich altijd verhouden tot een ‘staat van noodzaak’: het opereren in de marges, het becommentariëren van establishment en het hoeden van het onbenoembare zijn altijd de intrinsieke opgaven van de kunsten geweest. Wat we doen is dus juist nu van groot belang, de vraag is dus hoe we dat dan moeten doen. Niet alleen binnen de AKI maar misschien nog wel meer daarbuiten.
In tegenstelling tot wat namelijk vaak het beeld is, gaat het onderwijs in kunst en ontwerp niet alleen over het werk zelf, maar over het ontwikkelen van een aantal belangrijke individuele competenties die onze samenleving ten goede komen. Zo zijn het creatief vermogen, het vermogen tot groei en ontwikkeling en het vermogen tot kritische reflectie de drie belangrijkste competenties waarin onze studenten worden geschoold.
Er zijn op dit moment veel vragen waar we geen antwoord op kunnen geven, maar dat hoeft ook niet altijd. De vragen helpen ons allen om na te denken waar het voor ons om gaat en pas in tweede instantie hoe we dat willen bereiken. En daarin heb ik bij deze lichting afgestudeerden juist een enorm vertrouwen: als je een opleiding aan de AKI op deze manier, onder deze condities zo succesvol kan afsluiten, dan kun je alles aan!

In front of you is the presentation of the works of the AKI graduation 2020. The fact that we can present them here is a great achievement. You will have noticed that the year 2020 has brought a significant extra challenge for our society, and especially for this group of graduates. Particularly in the light of the general anxious and insecure feelings within society in recent months, it shows the enormous strength and flexibility of the graduates that they reached the finish line – sometimes half improvising and half tinkering. It is nothing short of fantastic that this class of AKI graduates 2020 has managed to work its way through the challenges and disappointments and has passed a good final exam within all – sometimes seemingly impossible – limitations. This time also demanded much from the supervising teachers and staff and we want to record, underline and celebrate this through this presentation.
The Covid-19 crisis has left socio-economic traces that will be felt for a long time and in many cases have started irreversible movements. It is becoming clear that this crisis will have long consequences for our societies, plural, because the global economic cross-links no longer make any society stand on its own. As a result of the corona crisis, the urgency of a review or revision of our social, economic and social structure has become prominent in several places and in several ways. So it would be easy to outline a very pessimistic perspective for the future, but that wouldn’t be justified for two reasons.
First there is “the big reverser”. The nice thing about a crisis is that the manager is forced to work from home, while the box filler gets plenty of room on the train. The concept of crucial profession shows a lot about the sense and nonsense in our social relationships. The trip to South America is canceled, but the backyard appears to offer many opportunities for recreation. Small things become big and vice versa. There will hardly be anyone who has not had an increased interest in experiencing art and culture during the time of the intelligent lock-down. A large part of the population has experienced more books, films, images, music, photos, dance, theater recordings and other art forms than usual, and has also drawn much comfort and joy from it. The importance of a good and strong cultural sector has therefore never been so clear as now. The past time has not been simple, yet the recent period has led to an increased awareness among citizens that “small happiness” has a lot of value. The good news is also that the crisis is hitting all sectors hard and therefore will be quickly ending certain dogmas and pillars.
Secondly, the arts have always related to a “state of necessity”: operating in the margins, commenting on the establishment and guarding the unnamable have always been the intrinsic tasks of the arts. So what we do is of great importance right now, and the only question is how we should do it. Not only within the AKI but perhaps even more importantly beyond. Contrary to what is often the image, education in art and design is not just about the work itself, but about developing a number of important individual competences that benefit our society. For example, the creative capacity, the capacity for growth and development and the capacity for critical reflection are the three main competences in which our students are trained.
There are many questions we can’t answer right now, but we don’t always have to. The questions help us all to think about what matters to us and only in the second instance how we want to achieve it. And I have enormous confidence in this class of graduates: if you can successfully complete an education at the AKI in this way, under these conditions, you can do anything!
